Why 2019 Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal House is for Umuahia East State Constituency – Apugo
By Henry Uwalaka
The Ikwuano, Umuahia North, Umuahia South Federal House of Representatives seat since inception has a zoning arrangement that allows each Local Government to go for only one tenure. And each local government is to share it within their wards or state constituency. This has been kept from the beginning without any interruption.
But going by speculations and insinuations, it seems that some personal and groups interest is plotting to disrupt that agreed arrangement. Though some speak against zoning system saying that is not healthy for true democracy and development of the society, yet many believe that for the interest of justice, equity and fairness there is very much need for an equitable share of political power.
As the 2019 election draw nearer, opinions, reactions, and political intrigues have continued to trade over the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal House of Representatives seat. For instance, Ibeku and Ohuhu clan that made up Umuahia North Local Government Area who is to produce the next Ikwuano/Umuahia House of representative seat going by the zoning arrangement are on political jostling over who occupy the seat comes 2019, while the incumbent, Hon. Sam Onuigbo from Ikwuano is perceived to be warming up seriously for second term. And many have been describing that perceived move by Rep. Onuigbo as a tall dream that is unrealistic.
Analysing the journey so far of the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal constituency seat recently during the formal declaration ceremony of Hon. Martin Ikechukwu Apugo for Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal constituency 2019, an All Progressive Congress Chieftain, Chief Prince B.B Apugo (Opara Ibeku) said it would be unfair if the people of Ikwuano/Umuahia failed to put the record straight considering the fact that all the five state constituencies that made up Ikwuano/Umuahia namely Umuahia North, Umuahia South, Umuahia Central, Umuahia East and Ikwuano have produced members of the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal House of Representatives except Umuahia East.
According to Chief B.B Apugo’s analysis, Ohuhu in Umuahia North has produced two Federal House of Representatives members, in the persons of Hon. Ikemba Adimoha and Chief Empire Kanu. Hon. Stanley Ohajuruka from the same Umuahia North represented Umuahia central state constituency. Umuahia South has also produced two Federal House members, in the persons of Hon. Acho Obioma and Hon. Oluchi Ibeji. Ikwuano has produced two Federal House members, in the persons of Hon. Emeka Atuma and the incumbent, Hon. Sam Onuigbo, while Umuahia East state constituency has produced none.
He therefore called on people of Ikwuano/Umuahia and lovers of justice, equity and fairness to support Umuahia East state constituency to produce the next Federal House of Representatives member.
In his official declaration speech, the president of Diamond Football Academy and leader of Great Leadership Advocacy a.k.a Peoples Alliance front PAF, Hon. Martin Ikechukwu Apugo, said; “apart from the constitutional right which all of us have to contest, I think it is the right thing and turn of Umuahia East state constituency to go for House of Representatives. All the clans have all taken their turn and my people cannot be shortchanged”.
“Most people that had represented us in the past keep coming up with one excuse or the other about their failures, but that story will change with me. I will change the face of Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency if elected. That is a promise I intend to keep”, Hon. Apugo said.
The Ibeku Egwu Asa president General, Princewill Ukaegbu, Ikwuan, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South All Progressive Congress APC women Leaders, others that spoke at the declaration occasion called on the people of Ikwuano/Umuahia to support the ambition of Hon. Ikechukwu Apugo whom they said have found worthy and capable of providing good representation to the people, and also urged them not to allow themselves to be deceived by antics of some politicians whose job is to mislead the people with wrong information.
Hon. Ikechukwu Martin Apugo hails from Umuakaka Nkata Afarata Ibeku in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.
